Records of prisoners and prison staff are held in a number of different places, including The National Archives, prisons themselves and local archives. There is no national register of prisoners, so it is often best to start your search in local archives.

Is pentridge the Old Melbourne Gaol?
In 1924, Pentridge replaced the Melbourne Gaol as the main remand and reception prison for the metropolitan area. In 1929, Melbourne Gaol was closed and its prisoners relocated to Pentridge. The prison was finally closed in 1997 and sold by the State Government of Victoria.
