What are the changes to the NHS Pension Scheme?

As the NHS Pension Scheme has moved from final salary linked to a career average revalued earnings ( CARE ) model, all members will build up CARE benefits from 1 April 2022. This change ensures that the costs and benefits of the scheme are more evenly shared, and will be introduced as part of the McCloud remedy.

When did NHS Pension Scheme change?

1 April 2015
From 1 April 2015 a new NHS pension scheme came into effect. Members working in the NHS should have received a leaflet in their payslips about the new scheme earlier in the year.

Can I take my NHS pension at 55 and still work?

You can work in the NHS and to continue to accrue pension benefits beyond age 60. You cannot accrue more than 45 calendar years’ service or be pensionable beyond age 75.

Does McCloud Judgement mean I can retire at 60?

All terms and conditions are fully protected. This means that if you have 1995 Section benefits, for example, that you can still retire and draw these at 60 without any reduction for early payment applying.

Can I buy back NHS pension years?

Members may be eligible to buy Added Years at half the normal cost if they took a refund of NHS contributions for a period of membership prior to 6 April 1978, or for any period when they were a self employed GP.

How will the McCloud Judgement affect my NHS pension?

The McCloud remedy will remove the age discrimination that was judged to have arisen in public service pension schemes, including the NHS Pension Scheme. To ensure equal treatment going forward, all active members of the NHS Pension Scheme will be in the 2015 Scheme from 1 April 2022.

Does going part time affect my NHS pension?

Pensions for part time staff are calculated on the whole time equivalent salary, so moving from full time to part time work, rather than retiring, should not reduce the level of pensionable pay for the calculation of pension benefits. However, it will reduce the rate at which members build up future membership.

Will I get a full state pension if I have an NHS pension?

Will I still get a State Pension? The NHS Pension Scheme is completely separate from the State Pension arrangements and any other pension schemes you may have. This means you will normally get a separate basic State Pension as well as your NHS pension.

How many years can you pay into NHS pension?

Members are restricted to 40 years pensionable membership at age 55 and 45 years overall. Where maximum 45 years pensionable membership is reached before age 60 members must continue to pay contributions until age 60 unless they opt out of the Scheme or retire and claim their pension benefits.
