Where do you park to walk around Buttermere lake?

Whilst there is quite a bit of parking available in Buttermere on summer weekends it gets busy early. On the outskirts is the National Trust car park, or in the centre behind the Bridge Hotel is the Lake District National Park car park. Also there are some spaces on the verge above the Newlands Pass road junction.

Is there parking at Buttermere?

A large pay and display car park is available in Buttermere itself, operated by the National Park. Alternatively, at the other end of the lake a small pay and display car park is operated by Gatesgarth Farm (Grid Ref NY195 150).

Situated at the northern end of Thirlmere reservoir, Raven Crag is a short, but steep Wainwright Fell. The route is less than 2 miles in total and is an out and back that gives stunning views over Thirlmere and the surrounding fells. Look up and you’ll see the imposing Raven Crag looming over you!

Wainwright wrote that ‘there is only one Mellbreak’, a very true assertion. Mellbreak is a really simple walk and is much easier than it looks, just 1.5 miles from the pub to the top of the north summit. Start from the Kirkstile Inn and walk down the lane.
